Adding Viktor to Slack makes him a member of your Slack workspace. Your team can then message him directly or mention **@Viktor** in channels. You install him once, from the setup wizard, and choose which channels he joins.

## Install Viktor

1. Go to [app.viktor.com/signup](https://app.viktor.com/signup) and choose **Continue with Slack**.
2. If the setup wizard shows **Add Viktor to Slack**, choose it. Slack may open its approval screen on its own.
3. On Slack's screen, pick your workspace and approve Viktor.

Once Slack reports Viktor as connected, the wizard moves on to the channel step.

## Choose the channels Viktor joins

The wizard asks "Which channels should Viktor join?" and shows how many public channels it found in your workspace.

- To add Viktor to every public channel, choose **Invite Viktor to public channels only (N)**, where N is the channel count.
- To pick channels yourself, choose **Select channels**. Search the list, or use **Select all**, then choose **Invite Viktor to channels**. You must pick at least one channel.

Viktor can't add himself to a private channel. To add him to one, type `/invite @Viktor` in that channel.

You can remove Viktor from any channel at any time.

## Finish setup

After the channel step, the wizard asks a few questions and helps you pick and connect tools. See [The setup wizard](/docs/getting-started) for those steps.

The last screen reads "Now go to Slack!". Choose **Message Viktor** to open his direct message in Slack, or **Add more integrations** to connect more tools first.

In Slack, you find Viktor under **Apps** in the sidebar. You can also mention **@Viktor** in any channel he's in.

## Viktor's first message

When you finish the tool steps, Viktor starts his setup and sends you a direct message in Slack. It explains how to work with him and suggests things to try. Viktor sets this up once per installer. Running the wizard again does not send it again.

The exact wording of this message can differ between workspaces.

### If you left the wizard early

If you approved Viktor in Slack but closed the wizard before finishing, Viktor still sends you a welcome message. It arrives between 30 minutes and 16 hours after the install. If Viktor is not in any channels yet, the message ends with two buttons: **Join public channels** and **Join all channels**. Choose one to add him to your channels.

After 16 hours, Viktor no longer sends this message.

## When teammates open Viktor in Slack

The first time anyone in your workspace opens Viktor's **Messages** tab in Slack, Viktor sends them a short welcome message. It is sent only if their conversation with Viktor is still empty, and at most once per person.

## Limits by plan and permission

- Only an admin can install Viktor and choose his channels. Members who are not admins never see these steps in the wizard.
- The welcome message after an unfinished install goes only to the person who installed Viktor.
- Any member of the workspace gets the one-time welcome in Viktor's **Messages** tab.
- No plan limit applies to installing Viktor in Slack. For what each plan includes, see [Plans and credits](/docs/plans-and-credits).

## Common problems

- **"Could not join channels. Please try again."** or **"Could not join selected channels. Please try again."** Viktor couldn't join the channels. Try the step again.
- **"Could not finish Viktor setup. Please try again."** Viktor's setup didn't start after the tool steps, so his first message won't arrive. Try the step again.
- **Viktor doesn't answer in a channel.** Make sure he's a member of that channel. For a private channel, run `/invite @Viktor`. See [Viktor is not responding](/help/category/working-with-viktor/viktor-not-responding).
- **You want to rename Viktor in Slack.** See [Change Viktor's name or icon](/help/category/working-with-viktor/rename-or-change-bot-icon).
